LEDs and Dimmer Switches for NYC Design Week Sculptures

An artist friend asked me to source LED strips, create a custom black plastic dimmer switch, and wire everything up for four sculptures to go into his exhibit at NYC Design Week.

Four illuminated sculptures

Requirements

  • We were on a tight budget, so I had to find the cheapest LEDs that met the client’s spec: 12V/24V, 2700K Color Temperature, Dimmable, “Dotless”

  • Provide power supply for each sculpture: calculate current/wattage draw and spec an appropriate AC Adapter

  • Fabric-wrapped cord coming from the sculpture

  • Re-house the dimmer switch in a custom black enclosure

  • Identify and source M7 nuts for the dimmer switch’s potentiometer

  • Provide a nicer switch that fits dimmer switch’s “6mm knurled shaft”

  • Specify grommets to protect the surprisingly delicate fabric-wrapping on the power cord
